Jazmine Walter knows a hundred-dollar word when she hears one. "I looked up bioluminescence," said the 8-year-old third-grader at Guy Lee Elementary School in Springfield. The word, which left many adults in her classroom scratching their heads, refers to the light given off by living organisms.

Bill Haynes has a Texas A&M University cap that he'll wear only occasionally, under the condition that no one takes his photograph while he's wearing it. Haynes and his wife, Carol, are University of Texas graduates who through the years have drenched their house in burnt orange and white — especially at Christmas — and raised their three children singing Longhorns songs and watching Longhorns football. Their oldest two children, Kim and William Jr., went to UT.

There's an old-time barber shop on the first block of Bonham street in Paris. The shop has been a place to get a hair cut since before the famous fire in 1916, which burned most of downtown. "They never missed a day's work in '16. The building scorched, but they kept on working," said Bill Haynes, who currently leases a chair at the Royal Barber Shop. The shop — at 116 Bonham St. — still has the antique chairs, mirrors and woodwork, but the three barbers who work there are able to provide modern style

Doug Kinsinger, president and chief executive officer for Go Topeka and the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, said engineers who conducted a study to find the best site for a new industrial park chose the land in southern Shawnee County for characteristics that included reaso

S.E. 4th and Branner quickly became one of the most accident-ridden intersections in Topeka after city council members voted in 2007 to replace its stop lights with stop signs. Councilwoman Sylvia Ortiz, who represents the district where that crossing is located, is consequently sponsoring a resolution through which the council would ask the city manager to place on a council agenda -- as soon as possible -- a proposed project budget and ordinance to put up traffic signals there. The resolution is amo

Vallejo's community access television programming may soon see a boost in cash to buy new equipment, following a Vallejo City Council vote Tuesday. The council unanimously voted to update city law regarding revenue coming from cable companies that serve Vallejo residents, over fears that those costs would be passed on to consumers. Senior citizen Bill Haynes said it seemed inevitable that Vallejo customers will see yet another hike in their bills.

Consider for a senior citizen how much of our time is spent watching television -- it's our window into the world   -Bill Haynes

A resolution to accept a $1.3 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration passed without a great deal of discussion at Tuesday night's Conway City Council meeting. The bulk of the money will be used to buy property in the Lollie Bottoms area needed for the planned new airport. Mayor Tab Townsell said one property owner has agreed on a per-acre price for their land and told the council he hoped this negotiated price would also be agreed upon by the remaining property owners.
